Methylation testing in the UK

Methylation is one of the most active processes in your body and one of the least talked about. It happens roughly a billion times a second, and it's involved in how you produce energy, process hormones, build neurotransmitters, clear what you don't need and read your own DNA.

A methylation test tells you how well your body is built to do that work — and where it might need more support than average. I'm a Registered Nutritionist and Lifecode Gx accredited practitioner, and I've been reading these reports for long enough to know that the report itself is the easy part.

What methylation actually is

Methylation is the transfer of a small molecule — a methyl group, one carbon and three hydrogens — from one compound to another. It sounds trivial. It's the switch behind an enormous amount of what keeps you functioning.

Your body uses methylation to:

  • Build and break down neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine and adrenaline
  • Process and clear oestrogen and other hormones
  • Support the liver's normal detoxification pathways
  • Turn genes on and off — which is how your environment influences your biology
  • Maintain the myelin that insulates your nerves
  • Keep homocysteine in a healthy range

The pathway runs on nutrients: folate, B12, B6, B2, choline, betaine, magnesium and zinc. If you carry variants that make one step less efficient, you may simply need more of a particular nutrient — or a different form of it — than the general population.

What a methylation test shows you

A genetic methylation test reads variants in the genes governing that pathway. It's a one-off test — your DNA doesn't change — done from a saliva or cheek-swab sample you take at home.

What it gives you is a map of tendencies. Which steps in the pathway are likely to run efficiently, which are likely to run slowly, and therefore which nutrients and forms are worth prioritising for you specifically.

Two things it is not. It is not a diagnosis — carrying a variant tells you about a tendency, not a disease. And it is not a prediction — genes describe the terrain, and how you live on that terrain matters at least as much.

The genes involved

The panel I use covers the following, among others:

  • MTHFR — converts folate into its active form. The most common and most discussed variant in this pathway.
  • COMT — breaks down dopamine, adrenaline and oestrogen. Influences how you handle stress, caffeine and stimulation.
  • MAO-A — breaks down serotonin and other neurotransmitters. Relevant to mood and sleep patterns.
  • MTR and MTRR — recycle B12 within the pathway.
  • CBS and BHMT — govern alternative routes through the cycle.
  • VDR — the vitamin D receptor, which affects how well you use the vitamin D you have.
  • AHCY, FUT2, PEMT and others — supporting steps that shape how the whole cycle behaves.

A single gene in isolation rarely tells you much. The value is in seeing how the pathway behaves as a whole, which is why interpretation matters more than the raw result.

"Is this the test I heard about on a podcast?"

Probably yes, in substance. Methylation testing has had a lot of attention through health podcasts in recent years, most prominently through Gary Brecka's work in the United States, and many people arrive here having heard about it that way.

Three things worth knowing. That specific American test isn't available to order in the UK. The genes it covers — MTHFR, COMT, MAO-A and related — are all included in the panel I use, alongside a good many more. And this is a UK laboratory, with a registered practitioner reading your report and building the plan that follows.

That last part is the difference that matters. A results PDF is not a plan.
